In British Virgin Islands, hurricane whips up green energy transition 31 July 2018 - Burdened by costly fuel imports and a power grid destroyed by Hurricane Irma, the British Virgin Islands are aiming to produce more electricity from renewables. A series of solar energy projects is due to kick off soon, said Mark Vanterpool, BVI minister for communications and works. (more)
Replicas of Columbus' ships tour as sailing museum 13 May 2011 - Replicas of two of the ships that Christopher Columbus sailed to the New World are going on display at the North Carolina Maritime Museum Pier in Beaufort. The 'Nina' and the 'Pinta' will be touring together as a 'sailing museum' to educate the public and school children on a 'caravel', a Portuguese ship used by Columbus and many early explorers. (more)
Plan made to save lemurs 18 April 2011 - Billionaire entrepreneur Richard Branson plans to create a colony of lemurs on an undeveloped island he owns in the Caribbean, saying Monday it's a 'radical idea' to save an endangered primate that is disappearing from its native African habitat. Lemurs are found only on Madagascar and the Comoro Islands and are considered the most threatened of all primates, according to the World Wildlife Fund. (more)
