While modern medicine can often have negative side effects, the natural, holistic approach of Maharishi Ayur-Veda can often have side benefits.

Modern medicine treats the symptoms, not the cause, said Dr Anand Srivastava, head of Maharishi Ayur-Veda products in India.

This is like turning off the fire alarm instead of putting out the fire, Dr Srivastava explained.

'[When] there is a headache, people take some pill [and] the feeling of headache is gone. But the problem, which our body wanted to express by way of headache, will continue in the system,' he said.

'Maharishi Ayur-Veda has the solution to this,' he said.

Dr Srivastava highlighted promising research on a variety of Maharishi Ayur-Veda herbal preparations, including one for asthma.

In their preliminary study of the product, a prestigious institution in the field of respiratory health found that not only were the frequency and intensity of asthma reduced, but several other problems associated with asthma were improved as well.

Participants in the study enjoyed 'side benefits' through Maharishi Ayur-Veda, he said.
