by Agnes Donato

16 August 2006
On 16 August 2006 Saipan Tribune reported:
The Governor of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) has signed legislation which establishes requirements for renewable energy, energy efficiency, and standards for clean energy transportation.
Global Good News service views this news as a sign of rising positivity in the field of government, documenting the growth of life-supporting, evolutionary trends.
The article reported that the legislature states: 'Rising world oil prices have had a profound effect on the Commonwealth most notably with regard to public utilities. The Legislature further finds that the CNMI must reduce its dependence on fossil fuels and move toward the use of renewable energy while setting realistic deadlines for meeting that goal.'
The new law directs all electric companies to begin converting to renewable energy, starting with a requirement of five per cent of their total output originating from renewable energy resources by the end of 2007, and increasing incrementally each year until the percentage of renewable energy output reaches the mandated 50 per cent by the year 2030.
Corporations failing to meet the standards will have a chance to apply for extensions and waivers for good cause, but truants may be fined up to $1000 per non-complying day.
According to Saipan News, tax incentives for the use of renewable energy are expected to be added in the near future.
