20 July 2006
On 20 July 2006 Reuters reported:
China plans to spend 1.4 trillion yuan (US$175 billion) on cleaning up its pollution and protecting the environment over the next five years.
Global Good News service views this news as a sign of rising positivity in the field of government, documenting the growth of life-supporting, evolutionary trends.
Reuters reports the problems are so extreme they have even caused riots. It said that 'China is home to 20 of the world's 30 most smog-choked cities,' and noted a government official says the money will be spent on the 'control of water pollution, improving air quality in cities, and halting soil erosion'.
Part of the plan is to build sewage treatment plants for the disposal of urban wastewater, which will also reduce sulphur dioxide and dust in China's smog-filled cities.
The plan will also address the major issue of soil pollution. Xinhua, the official news agency of China, said that problem threatens people's health and China's food.
It is estimated that 12 million tonnes of grain are polluted by heavy metals that have found their way into China's soil each year, it was reported.
