On 10 July 2008 BBC News reported: Turning unused urban land into free vegetable gardens for the community is the mission of a Detroit, Michigan charity called Urban Farming. The healthy, low-cost idea is spreading along with a renewed community spirit. Global Good News service views this news as a sign of rising positivity in the field of environment, documenting the growth of life-supporting, evolutionary trends.

Three years ago music recording artist Taja Sevelle saw the need to create a practical and affordable self-help movement for inner-city dwellers, who could feed themselves by planting vegetables on vacant lots.

With $5,000 and a pamphlet explained her plan, the singer gathered support for her project across Detroit.

The BBC News reported, '(Now) Urban Farming co-ordinates the cultivation of what amounts to 500 family-sized gardens across Detroit,' and the charity is spreading across the United States.

Detroit residents remark on the 'astonishing transformation' from barren to blooming land, and how, in spite of the fact that there are no fences, people just take what they need.

'People are only taking what they need, because they know it's for everybody,' a local Detroit resident said.

The BBC News reported, 'Many of the regular gardeners come from rehabilitation programmes linked to the county jail. Offenders say they have earned self-respect, as well as local thanks, for literally doing the spade-work.'

The BBC quoted Reginald Moore as saying, 'It's good for me to know that I'm helping somebody, instead of hurting somebody.'

There are many benefits to a neighbourhood produce plot where people gather to 'spread collective wisdom', and 'restore culture' to the area. Even crime has gone down in Urban Farming neighbourhoods.

The BBC quoted the local city hall manager as saying, 'Fresh fruits and vegetables are something that we all need. And we really, really need to educate our children in that area.'
