The idea to launch a new master's degree programme in Sustainable Living at Maharishi University of Management came about through the desire to give students an even deeper level of knowledge, give them a marketable skill set, and help empower communities to become fully self-sufficient.
Dr David Fisher, Chair of the Sustainable Living department at the university, explained more about the new degree programme.
The plan is to offer two tracks: a Master of Arts (MA) and Master of Science (MS), both focusing on sustainable community development.
A big part of the master's degree programme will involve students getting hands-on experience in assisting communities to become more sustainable, thus giving the students many chances to integrate and practise all the theory they learn.
Dr Fisher explained that the Sustainable Living department has been getting more and more requests over the years 'for us to go and help a community in Bhutan, in Ghana, in Grenada, in various places around the world'.
The department would like to able to assist these communities, but, Dr Fisher explained, they can't do this without depleting their own resources. 'We still have to have someone here to teach the courses.'
So, on one hand, the master's programme will assist communities in need around the world.
'It becomes a vehicle for allowing us to actually go out and help these communities that request our assistance,' said Dr Fisher. He added that providing this assistance will likely result in better understanding of the best ways to give help to similar communities worldwide.
But the programme will also provide real-world experience for its students and give them the knowledge and skill set to make a living and make a difference.
