In a talk that focused on the healing powers of Transcendental Meditation, Norman Rosenthal, M.D. also mentioned the technique's application in other fields besides health.
Though he spoke to an audience of medical professionals and covered such topics as improvements in blood pressure, heart disease, PTSD, and trait anxiety, Dr Rosenthal also explained the dramatic transformation that occurred at a middle school on the west coast of the United States.
'It was one of the worst schools in the area,' said Dr Rosenthal. 'It was pandemonium. . . . Not only did the kids fight with each other, but the school teachers were dragged into the fighting and they stayed away from school. The teachers took sick leaves on Thursdays and Mondays, gave themselves long weekends. The kids were suspended for multiday suspensions.'
The school changed dramatically when Transcendental Meditation was introduced through the Quiet Time programme.
Dr Rosenthal said that the principal and the superintendent of schools for the district highly praised 'what the Quiet Time programme has done in their schools. It turned them around'.
To illustrate the change, Dr Rosenthal showed graphs of the school's attendance levels and overall grade point average (GPA).
In two different schools, both of which started Quiet Time, the attendance levels were steadily dropping before the programme began. After the introduction of Quiet Time, the attendance levels began to increase.
A similar pattern was seen with the GPA averages at both schools. GPAs had been decreasing, but after Quiet Time began the averages started to steadily increase.
Dr Rosenthal commented on 'one fascinating thing that happened with the grade point average', noting that 'the holy grail in education is to close the ''achievement gap'' between the lowest performers and the highest performers.'
The introduction and implementation of Quiet Time began to close that achievement gap, Dr Rosenthal said. The school principal was recognized among his peers 'for turning the school around'.
