Serbia: Growing interest in Transcendental Meditation, Consciousness-Based Education

In the past year, interest in the Transcendental Meditation Technique and Consciousness-Based Education has risen greatly in Serbia, the result of a variety of presentations given in universities, institutes, and businesses, and to education leaders.

A highlight of the year was the visit of Dr Ashley Deans, an international expert in Consciousness-Based Education who is Executive Director of Maharishi School in Fairfield, Iowa, USA.

Dr Deans gave over a dozen presentations on this topic at universities throughout Serbia. His presentations were well received and reported widely in the press, stirring great interest in educational programmes developed by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, including Transcendental Meditation.

Dr Deans also spoke to education leaders in universities and government, and at an economics institute and a large company in Serbia that is interested in offering Transcendental Meditation to employees. During his visit he also met with a group of people who practise Transcendental Meditation in Belgrade.

In June a programme to teach Transcendental Meditation to a group of young sportsman was approved. The programme will begin in September, in context of a broader project known as 'Happy people, healthy thoughts'.

There are four permanent centres teaching the Transcendental Meditation Programme in Serbia. The centres offer courses throughout the year, including instruction in Transcendental Meditation and advanced programmes for those already practising the technique.

Each year Vedic experts from India visit the centres, teaching advanced techniques of Transcendental Meditation and refresher courses in the advanced Transcendental Meditation Sidhi Programme, including Yogic Flying. In-residence courses for meditators are also given four times or more during the year.
