Israel: Discipline problems, violence recede in school where students practise Transcendental Meditation

At a high school in Israel that has implemented the Transcendental Meditation Programme, teachers, parents, and the students themselves are noticing marked improvements in their behaviour. Prior to introducing Consciousness-Based Education, the school struggled with discipline problems and violence.
One teacher commented that lasting change needs to come from within—trying to force good behaviour has not proven effective.
'We have seen that in order to change the students' behaviour, or to overcome the discipline problem, we need to change something within the students. It is not enough to make rules and try to make everyone follow them. In fact, [using this approach] you don't change their behaviour at all.
'That is why we adopted meditation,' the teacher continued. 'So practising meditation, the students will start to really change, [and] not just for a year, or two or three. We are giving the student the possibility that throughout his life he will not only succeed at school for a short time, but through the meditation also succeed throughout his life.'
Students comment on the positive changes as well.
'Before meditation I was an angry person,' one student said. 'I had a lot of problems. Even when I slept I would wake up every half an hour. Now I almost don't have any problems; they have solved themselves. My relationships are better, and I am much calmer now.'
Another student said he used to be lonely, but has made many new friends since beginning the practice of Transcendental Meditation.
Parents are also noticing improvements in their children.
'My parents say that my behaviour has improved a lot,' a student reported. 'It has changed from before meditation. Now after meditation it's much better.'
