Mexico, Colombia: Consciousness-Based Education reduces crime and violence in cities

Over the last several years, implementing Consciousness-Based Education programmes in the Latin American countries of Brazil, Chile, Colombia, and Mexico has led to positive changes within the schools of those nations, as well as in the communities and cities surrounding the schools.
The headmaster of a large school in Brazil, in which 2,400 students have learned the Transcendental Meditation Programme, reported that the atmosphere of the institution has grown calmer, and students have been earning better grades as well as adhering to healthier habits.
At a university in Arica, Chile, a research study during the past year has revealed the correlation between student practice of Transcendental Meditation and a higher quality of education, resulting from enhanced brain functioning promoted by the programme.
Over the last two years in Colombia, Consciousness-Based Education has brought about a great transformation for the city of Medellin, one of the most populated in the country. While the city used to be ridden with crime and violence, this year police officials have reported decreased crime levels—especially in areas surrounding schools where Consciousness-Based Education has been implemented.
In one city in Mexico, Consciousness-Based Education brought about a dissolution of crime—including violence and drug-related incidents. While 2007 was one of the worst years for that city, in 2008, the instruction of several hundred students in Transcendental Meditation helped ease the chaotic climate and create more harmony. 'The inhabitants of this city began to feel as if they had some control over the destiny of their community,' commented Raja Jose Luis Alvarez, Raja of Invincible Latin America for the Global Country of World Peace, on 5 May 2009.
'School officials, principals, teachers, and parents everywhere are recognizing the vast benefits of Maharishi's programmes for the field of education,' said Raja Luis in closing.
