Dr Volker Schanbacher, Minister of Education of the Global Country of World Peace, presents Maharishi's unsurpassed achievements in education - Part I

At the outset of the conference on 'Creating Ideal Consciousness-Based Schools and Universities—Total Knowledge for all Students, Invincibility for the Nation' on 19 July 2008, Dr Volker Schanbacher, Minister of Education of the Global Country of World Peace, presented a beautiful and comprehensive summary of the achievements of his ministry over the past year.

This six-day professional training programme is being held in MERU, the Netherlands, coinciding with the global celebrations of Guru Purnima at the Capital of the Global Country of World Peace.

Reflecting on the historic contribution of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Founder of the Global Country of World Peace in the field of education, Dr Schanbacher said, 'Maharishi can truly be called the greatest teacher of the world; in Vedic terms the Jagatguru of supreme greatness, who continues to teach even today in the world through the large numbers of teachers he has created and through the countless videotaped lectures he has given us. He has taught us practical programmes to eliminate suffering in the world and to create an ideal society and Heaven on Earth.

'Through Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation Programme it is now possible for everyone to experience Transcendental Consciousness and even higher states of consciousness, something previously thought only to be possible through many decades of very long meditation.

'Maharishi has created ideal Vedic education for the Vedic Pandits of India at a time when Vedic knowledge had been overshadowed, and when the great significance of the recitation of the Veda was not seen any more. Maharishi's supreme gift for the world was that for now and all future times, large groups of Vedic Pandits are educated in the traditional recitations of Vedic texts. In view of the significance of preserving the supreme Vedic knowledge that has been handed down over generations of Vedic Pandits, this achievement alone from Maharishi in the field of education is beyond any comparison.'

Dr Schanbacher spoke of the great work by Maharaja Adhiraj Raja Raam, First Ruler of the Global Country of World Peace, in his book Human Physiology: Expression of Veda and the Vedic Literature. He described this as a 'precious gem of supreme Vedic knowledge which will be taught at centres of Consciousness-Based Education around the world'.

Dr Schanbacher said that even though it was not possible to list the innumerable institutions established by Maharishi since the founding of Maharishi International University in 1971 (later to become Maharishi University of Management), he would provide an overview of developments of recent years.

Beginning with India, Dr Schanbacher credited Dr Girish Varma who, under Maharishi's guidance, has established 150 schools all over India in more than 100 cities. Approximately 100,000 students presently enjoy Consciousness-Based Education at these schools.
