Film director David Lynch: 'Negativity cannot live in the light of consciousness'

While on a 16-country speaking tour, film director David Lynch answered questions from students, young professionals, and media personnel about his films and his practice of Transcendental Meditation.

In Edinburgh, Scotland, a student asked Mr Lynch about how to 'get rid of negativity'.

'That's a very great question,' Mr Lynch responded. 'The analogy for that is, they say negativity is just like darkness. You look at darkness and say, wait a minute, darkness isn't really anything; it's the absence of something.

'So it doesn't matter how dark the night has been—when the sun comes up, automatically, without trying, the sunlight removes the darkness.'

Mr Lynch's comments during the tour are featured in his new documentary, 'Meditation, Creativity, Peace'. In another context, describing to a reporter in Paris the nature of consciousness, Mr Lynch spoke more about negativity as the absence of consciousness.

'Tied to consciousness is all this: creativity, intelligence, energy, love, power, bliss, dynamic peace'—all positive things.

Through Transcendental Meditation, with the regular experience of transcending—the mind settling down to experience the deepest level of consciousness—'these qualities expand, so day by day you're growing in creativity, intelligence, love, energy,' Mr Lynch said.

'The side effect of the growth of this consciousness is that negativity starts to recede. Tension, stress, anxiety, sorrow, depression, anger, hate, and fear all start to go.'

Back to the student in Edinburgh, Mr Lynch continued with the darkness and sunlight analogy, again comparing sunlight to all the positive, unifying qualities of consciousness.

'Sunlight doesn't remove negativity, but this light of unity removes negativity, just like sunlight removes darkness. Negativity is just the absence of that all-powerful bliss, all-powerful love, all-powerful energy, dynamic peace, harmony, and coherence.'

Through transcending, Mr Lynch explained, one is able to increase 'all-powerful bliss' by experiencing and enlivening the field of pure consciousness, the deepest, most expanded level of awareness.

'You enliven that and negativity lifts away. It can't live in that light.'
