On 12 September 2012 China Daily reported:
As ties deepen between China and Chile, the South American country's food exports to China saw a strong increase of 35 per cent year-on-year to $438 million in 2011, according to the latest Chilean official data. The figures underline the South American country's position as one of the major fruit suppliers to China. Global Good News feels this is a positive trend provided the fruit is not genetically modified.

Global Good News comment:
Global Good News feels this is a Positive Trends provided the fruits being exported are not genetically modified. However, according to a Reuters article (5 March 2004) that appeared in USA Today and elsewhere, 'Chilean exporters and scientists at the Global Biotechnology Forum in Chile this week said they believe they can develop and patent new species of grapes, nectarines, and peaches—using genetic material made in the laboratory and transferred to the plant—within four years.'
