British designer Amy Molyneux recommends TM for 'living your full potential'

10 March 2011
British fashion designer Amy Molyneux starts her day with the Transcendental Meditation program, which she describes as ''yoga for the brain,'' according to a news story in the Sky Showbiz column. Amy and her design partner Percy Parker, who also practices the TM technique, created the fashion label PPQ in 1992 developing a design style that continues to set trends for London's fashion scene. They have designed dresses for Sienna Miller, Kirsten Dunst, Rihanna, Peaches Geldof, Girls Aloud, and many others. They also created a recording company, 1-2-3-4 Records, marrying music with style, launching new groups, and hosting a popular, annual music festival in London each summer.
Amy, 32, learned the Transcendental Meditation technique when she was 16 years old, and has been practicing TM ever since. ''It's like extra sleep,'' she says, ''it boosts your energy, and gives you more clarity and confidence.''
Running a record label and organizing promotional events in addition to her creative design and management demands at PPQ leaves Amy little time to recharge her batteries, which is why she makes sure she meditates twice a day. And she would recommend the TM technique to anyone who has to deal with the demands of a high-intensity career.
''I think people who are at the top of any business definitely need something, because the stress is massive. A lot of them survive on drinking—not excessively—or they're into sport, or they've got a really amazing partner who does loads for them. But when you've been doing TM for a while you can tell if people are giving the signals that they need a break!''
Nor is the Transcendental Meditation program just about stress release, says Amy—it's about living your full potential.
''A lot of people have the attitude 'I'm doing OK, so why do I need TM?' But then they think, well, I could do even better. If people say to me, I don't need that because there's nothing wrong with me, I would say no, it's not that there's something wrong with you—it's that what you've got is really special, and you should look after it.''
