Gautrain praised in international publication
South Africa: The Good News Translate This Article
23 January 2009
The Gautrain, South Africa's first ever rapid rail system, has been profiled in an international publication showcasing some of the world's most extraordinary infrastructure projects.
Published at the end of last year by Bentley Systems, a US-based infrastructure software solutions company, 'The Year in Infrastructure 2008' is considered a must-read for professionals in the industry. The special edition magazine highlights the 23 winners and the over 200 nominated projects emerging from Bentley's annual 'Be Awards of Excellence,' where only projects using Bentley products qualified for entry.
The Bentley awards took place in May 2008 and saw the Gautrain win an Excellence award in the 'Innovation in Rail Transit' category.
Gautrain was praised for its effective use of Bentley's ProjectWise document collaboration system in creating the 'cost-effective, efficient, environmentally friendly, and safe answer to some of the worst transport and road traffic problems in the most densely developed area in Gauteng province.'
The Gautrain was also praised for setting new benchmarks in the regional industry. 'As a flagship project for the South African government, Gautrain is set to change the way major projects are implemented,' said Bentley.
Gautrain won the award ahead of a new railway line being constructed along the Atlas Mountains in Algeria by Austrian firm Bernard Ingenieure and the high speed rail line from Madrid, Spain to the French border being constructed by Sacyr Valleherrmoso, a Spanish firm.
In December 2008, the first completed Gautrain rail cars arrived in South Africa from Derby, England where they were manufactured. The testing of these rail cars on the completed tracks in May 2009 will be among the exciting Gautrain events to take place this year.
