Amsterdam Port builds first biodiesel plant

AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - Amsterdam Port started construction of its first biodiesel plant on Friday which will recycle the city's organic waste into green power for its residents.

The plant will have an annual capacity of 100,000 tons of biodiesel and 40,000 tons of bioethanol, said project leader Markus Bran.

The plant, called Greenmills, aims to collect 350,000 tons of waste from the food and beverage sector, the port said in a statement. It will start operation by end-2009.
