9 February 2014
What are the very highest levels of human potential? What are the pinnacles of human experience? How can we achieve them? What are the benefits? The Supreme Awakening brings together a remarkable collection of transcendent experiences reported by people through the ages and shows that they are experiences of advanced stages of human development, higher states of consciousness—experiences of enlightenment.
The Supreme Awakening also shows how ordinary men and women today are enjoying the same kinds of sublime experiences celebrated by Laozi, the Buddha, Plato, St. Teresa of Avila, Wordsworth, Emerson, Thoreau, Emily Dickinson, Lucy Maud Montgomery, Einstein, and many others—simply by practicing the effortless technique of Transcendental Meditation. Finally, the book shows the immense, scientifically-validated benefits of cultivating enlightenment—in every area of life, for the individual and for our world.
A historical perspective Over the past century, a number of books, each a landmark work, each still read today, have endeavored to understand the sublime, exalted experiences reported by people through history: R.M. Bucke's Cosmic Consciousness (1901), William James's Varieties of Religious Experience (1902), Evelyn Underhill's Mysticism (1911), Aldous Huxley's The Perennial Philosophy (1945), Marghanita Laski's Ecstasy (1961), and others.
These books have inspired millions of readers by calling attention to these experiences and showing that there is far more to human potential than we ordinarily experience. The Supreme Awakening extends the scope of these books. Drawing on the work of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, The Supreme Awakening explains the origins of these experiences and provides a systematic way of categorizing them. Most important, it describes a practical method—the simple, effortless technique of Transcendental Meditation—that anyone can use to cultivate these remarkable experiences and enjoy the unparalleled benefits for themselves.
Throughout history, great men and women have described exalted experiences, moments of extraordinary wakefulness, freedom, and bliss—as different from our ordinary waking experience as waking is from dreaming. Laozi, Plato, Rumi, St. Teresa of Avila, Emerson, Emily Dickinson, Black Elk, Einstein—people of all times and places have described experiences that rank among the most inspiring in all of literature.
The Supreme Awakening: ∙ brings together a rich and diverse collection of these experiences ∙ explains these experiences in terms of a new, expanded framework of human development—the model of higher states of consciousness developed by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the renowned Vedic sage and scientist of consciousness ∙ shows how anyone can systematically cultivate these experiences through the Transcendental Meditation technique—simply, naturally, and effortlessly ∙ describes the wide-ranging benefits of cultivating enlightenment by means of the TM technique—inner peace and happiness, improved health, increased creativity and intelligence, improved productivity, and much more—with benefits for education, business, health care, the military, rehabilitation, and society as a whole ∙ shows that the sublime experiences reported by great people across time are real, universal, understandable in terms of modern science—and now available to everyone
