In Kosovo and Albania, countries that not long ago experienced war and strife, a distinguished visitor noted signs of optimism and peace. Dr Bevan Morris, President of Maharishi University of Management in Iowa, USA, recently commented about his tour of both countries several months ago.
About Kosovo, Dr Morris said that the country is to some degree suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from the war in 1999 and the pervasive fear among the population.
One topic that came up often in Dr Morris's meetings with educators and government officials in both countries was the Transcendental Meditation technique, a central element in the successful Consciousness-Based Education approach at Maharishi University of Management.
Among many scientifically documented benefits for health and well-being, Transcendental Meditation has been shown to relieve stress and dramatically improve the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.
One official Dr Morris met with in Kosovo mentioned that he had been practising Transcendental Meditation for some time and was interested to learn more about how it can be applied to reduce stress and improve the quality of life in the country.
In Kosovo, a suggestion also came up for clinical psychologists in the country to learn more about scientific research on Transcendental Meditation, begin practising the technique themselves and also prescribe it to patients suffering from high levels of stress, as a means of helping the country heal.
In Albania, Dr Morris was interviewed by a leading television station, newspaper, and magazine.
He was mainly interviewed by young journalists, he said, many of whom have little memory of what their country was like before the present era. Albania is healing from the wounds of war in the late 1990s, Dr Morris said, but 'no country has traveled further on the spectrum of human existence' in recent decades. Albania was one of the poorest countries in Europe, isolated and filled with fear. In that time, the United States was considered an enemy, but now, about two decades later, the countries are friends.
This is yet another expression of the Maharishi Effect, he said, referring to the peaceful outcome of large groups of people practising Transcendental Meditation and its advanced programmes together, bringing rising coherence, happiness, and freedom now in many parts of the world.
