On 22 July 2013, the organizations of the Global Country of World Peace* in many countries participated in the festival of Guru Purnima, the full moon day in July which each year honours the great teachers of the Vedic tradition of knowledge—the source of the programmes and technologies of consciousness brought to the world over 50 years by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.
The many programmes and institutions Maharishi founded for every area of society, including Transcendental Meditation and its advanced techniques, have been bringing improved health and a better quality of life for millions of people and creating an invincible momentum of rising prosperity and peace in countries throughout the world.
On this occasion 31 years ago, on 5 July 1982, Maharishi celebrated Guru Purnima at the historic International Capital of his worldwide programmes in Seelisberg, Switzerland.
In 1982 Maharishi was celebrating the eighth year of the 'Age of Enlightenment', which he had inaugurated in 1975 on the basis of the scientific discovery of the Maharishi Effect—reduced crime and violence, and rising coherence and positivity in society resulting from many people practising Transcendental Meditation. Maharishi recognized in this phenomenon the dawn of a new era of peace and harmony that would come to full blossoming through widespread application of his technologies of consciousness.
Maharishi began his July 1982 address by saying that celebrating Guru Purnima every year brought a 'revitalization of pure knowledge', giving increased vitality to all the activities of his organizations to create peace and unity in the world. He explained that now in this eighth year of the Age of Enlightenment, the new momentum created by this 'great vitality of pure knowledge' would continue to 'purify the whole world consciousness and establish that intensified, unified platform of consciousness in the world, which will disallow any weakness anywhere, and we'll promote with intensified vitality in every coming generation the fullness of life.'
Describing the structure of pure knowledge expressed in the Veda and Vedic literature, Maharishi explained the significance of daily practice of Transcendental Meditation and the advanced Transcendental Meditation Sidhi programme, including Yogic Flying, by people around the world: '. . . That one programme, Transcendental Meditation and the Sidhi programme to take our awareness from the diversified field of experience, to the unified wholeness of experience in the transcendence, and through the Sidhi programme we activate that field of Kaivalya in the transcendence.
'So here is the unification of the structure of pure knowledge in the transcendence, and activity in the transcendence, and in this structure of unity between knowledge and action, the knower is not lost in activity. The knower in his eternal silence is activity itself. In this is the field of all possibilities.'
Maharishi gave special recognition to Transcendental Meditation teachers and Yogic Flyers around the world, and particularly to special permanent groups founded the previous year, with their main focus on extended practice of these advanced meditation techniques. In Maharishi's explanation, their performance twice a day, morning and evening, was creating powerful waves of purification in world consciousness:
'It's such a great, good fortune of the world dawning from the basis of all life, the simplest form of human awareness. What is happening? The infinite variety and diversity in creation starts to breathe the significance of unity.' Transcendental Meditation teachers, Maharishi said, 'have been so successful in presenting on the surface level of expression this implication of pure knowledge in making the unity blossom in the field of diversity.
'The whole world is divided into fragments of life. They are fragments of life no doubt, but fragmented values of life is not the wholeness of life, and man is born to enjoy the wholeness of life. Human nervous system physiologically, biologically is so competent as to live the total potential of life. We have the field of all possibilities. All possibilities should belong to everyone born on Earth.'
Maharishi explained that this fragmented quality of life was predominating in the world because 'the whole population of the world not knowing how to function according to the laws of nature, not knowing how to function from the transcendence, keeps on creating stress in world consciousness.'
However, he said, the daily performance of the Transcendental Meditation teachers and advanced meditation groups was reducing stress and also enlivening unity in world consciousness:
'These groups who are absolutely focused and dedicated in enlivening the total potential of the Self, they have been viewing the diversified structure of life in the world and they have been experiencing the unified wholeness of life within themselves; and they have been seeing how their experience of unified wholeness is applicable to enlivening unity in the midst of all diversity.'
Acknowledging the many different religions, kinds of governments, and political, economic, and administrative systems in the world, Maharishi explained the natural role of his organizations and teachers around the world, functioning from the level of unity in their awareness, who 'have learned how to perform from that non-changing value and bring enrichment to all the fields of change'. On this basis, Maharishi said,
'Let every nation enjoy full potential of creativity through the alliance with natural law. Let every country enjoy self-sufficiency, invincibility. Let there be no fear on earth. Let there be unified wholeness in a natural way in the family of nations. And this possibility exists.'
Maharishi explained, 'Our work is from the transcendent. Our work is from the level of our soul. There are people devoted to their countries, patriots, their body and mind and intellect dedicated to their countries. . . . We work from the level of our soul, and that is the reason why we are capable of bringing total values to every nation. It's the level of the Self which is the level of the full potential of natural law, and it is that level which is omnipresent.'
At the conclusion of his 1982 address, Maharishi described the beautiful state of life that would natural unfold as this level of unity within the transcendental field becomes fully enlivened in the midst of all the world's diversity:
'The world is going to breathe in harmony, in fulfilment. Every system in the world will find fulfilment. Every religion in the world will be effective, no matter where a man is born, in whatever country, whatever be the system of administration, whatever the system of government, whatever religion, whatever themes of economics, whatever languages does not matter. It is the language of nature which is going to purify all languages in the world. It is the infinite creativity of natural law that is going to purify and bring fulfilment to all the streams of economics. . . .
'Nature is the best administrator, the best organizer. This, from the field of the transcendent is going to bring fulfilment to all the systems of governments in the world. . . . It's a very, very beautiful time for us, just one word, it's fullness.'
Maharishi's address from 1982 was played during a conference held today at Maharishi European Research University in Holland, attended by international directors of Maharishi's programmes, as well as directors of the Transcendental Meditation programme from many countries. The conference was chaired by neuroscientist Tony Nader, MD, PhD, who was honoured by Maharishi for his discovery of human physiology as the expression of Veda and the Vedic literature, with the title Maharaja Adhiraj Rajaraam, and the responsibility of guiding the activities of the Global Country of World Peace around the world. Dr Nader also addressed the assembly.
Today's conference was held concurrently at the Global Capital of World Peace in the centre (Brahmasthan) of India, with people in many countries also participating. During the celebration Maharishi Vedic Pandits in Holland and India performed a special peace-creating Maharishi Yagya.**
For the past week directors of Maharishi's programmes have been convening in MERU, Holland, for an annual conference to present achievements in their countries in the past year, and plans for the coming year.
* The Global Country of World Peace was founded by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi as a consortium of educational organizations in more than 100 countries working to create a new era of peace, progress, and prosperity in our world family. It is a 'nation without borders', a home for peace-loving people everywhere. The domain of the Global Country of World Peace is consciousness—the prime mover of life—the ground state of natural law, the field of all possibilities. It is a non-political, non-religious global organization and does not usurp or replace any of the functions of existing governments.
** Maharishi Yagyas are precise Vedic performances, conducted by Maharishi Vedic Pandits, to create specific life-supporting influences for individuals and nations from the field of pure consciousness, the field of total natural law, which is enlivened in the Pandits' consciousness through their daily practice of Transcendental Meditation and its advanced techniques.
