Canada: Fivefold increase in women learning Transcendental Meditation
Global Women's Organization for Total Knowledge Translate This Article
16 November 2012
The number of women learning Transcendental Meditation in Canada rose sharply this year, following the broadcast of Oprah Winfrey's TV show on 'TM Town', on her OWN network.
The show, which aired in March, featured the communities of Fairfield and neighbouring Maharishi Vedic City, Iowa, USA, where several thousand people practise Transcendental Meditation, and sparked an upsurge of interest in the programme across North America. In Canada, starting at the beginning of April, the number of women taking the meditation classes increased fivefold compared to the same time last year, and inquiries have continued high.
News and information about the Transcendental Meditation programme for women—including how and where to learn the technique in Canada—is being made more widely available to the public through a variety of channels including social media, webinars, and online advertising, as well as referrals from people who have learned the technique.
Pages have been created on Facebook® in both English and French. The national English page now has a colourful welcome tab, videos, and information about the teachers. Six Facebook pages have also been created for local cities in Canada, and teachers are using Facebook to advertise free introductory lectures.
Short video interviews of women relating personal benefits they have found from practising Transcendental Meditation are being posted on the English and French Facebook pages.
Three new women teachers of Transcendental Meditation joined the organization in Canada this year. Deborah Rubin, Chelsea McCooey, and Lisa Guest recently completed their teacher training course in Maharishi Vedic City. Deborah is teaching classes in Ontario, and Chelsea and Lisa in British Columbia.
Throughout the year the women's organization held regular conference calls focusing on bringing information about Transcendental Meditation to more women. For example, the January conference highlighted scientific research studies verifying the positive results of the technique in individuals and the society at large, and how to effectively present the research to the public.
Outreach to women continued at one-day knowledge courses in Toronto, Winnipeg, and Montreal for those who had already learned Transcendental Meditation.
The 'Quiet Time' project, started in September 2011 by a board member of the women's organization, has become a great success. Forty students at a high school in British Columbia practise Transcendental Meditation twice daily in class during the Quiet Time period. More than 20 staff and support workers have also learned the technique, including two school principals.
