Many countries have recently reported a substantial increase in the number of people learning Transcendental Meditation, including the USA. During the past 12 months more than 10,000 people (not counting those learning in Consciousness-Based Education projects) have learned Transcendental Meditation in the US—more than double that during the previous 12 month period.
There have been many contributing factors, including an excellent presence on the web, the publicity created by television shows such as Oprah Winfrey's Next Chapter, and the work of the David Lynch Foundation.
The David Lynch Foundation continues to go from strength to strength, sponsoring courses in Transcendental Meditation for schoolchildren, prisoners, veterans, and others. Recent promotional events have included a national summit, ''Resilience, the Brain and Meditation'', held in Washington, D.C., in May. This conference looked at how Transcendental Meditation can help veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, and speakers included W Scott Gould, US Deputy Secretary, Department of Veterans Affairs.
Other projects contributing to success include the Physicians Affiliate Courtesy Programme, which helps health professionals promote Transcendental Meditation to their patients. About 250 health professionals are participating, representing a five-fold increase during the last 12 months.
