Incorporating symmetry into architecture
Transcendental Meditation News - UK Translate This Article
4 January 2012
''If one wants to bring the cosmic, infinite laws of nature into relative life and into architecture then one should design symmetric buildings.'' — Dr Christian Schweizer
Continuing his lecture on beauty in Vastu, Dr Schweizer, an expert in Maharishi Vedic architecture, went on to say that incorporating symmetry into architectural design follows the self-referral pattern of Nature's functioning, bringing the cosmic value of Natural Law into the outer field of relative life. Dr Schweizer pointed out that symmetry can be incorporated into any type of architecture, traditional or contemporary, and can be gracefully integrated with local style.
Maharishi Mahesh Yogi said that even the common proverb, ''There is nothing new under the sun,'' expresses the reality of Nature's self-referral functioning. Indeed, as Dr Schweizer points out, the principle of Smriti (memory) also applies to maintaining the memory of the rich tradition of architecture that has been handed down since ancient times. The classical forms used in architecture down through the ages, forms that have survived the test of time, display symmetry, orderliness, and refinement.
It is interesting to note that in every age symmetrical forms have been a symbol of wholeness, of the Divine. Throughout time, observes Dr Schweizer, rulers have built their residences symmetrically because it is a symbol of power, of divinity and of beauty—symmetry is a timeless, everlasting principle. Great architects have incorporated symmetry in the design of whole cities as well as individual buildings.
Global Good News will continue to feature more of this article, which is based on Dr Schweizer's lecture.
