Social cohesion comes from brain cohesion
Transcendental Meditation News - UK Translate This Article
5 September 2011
The recent riots in major cities in Great Britain shook the nation and stirred widespread analysis in the news media, reflecting deep soul-searching throughout British society: Why had they happened? What is wrong with our society? How can they be prevented from happening again?
A new analysis sheds light—and presents solutions—through an understanding encompassing neuroscience, collective stress, and the Transcendental Meditation Programme, which has been scientifically validated to neutralize both individual and social stress and create harmony and positivity in society.
The article refers to research on EEG abnormalities in the brains of those convicted of crime, including 'functional lesions—areas unused and cut off from mainstream brain activity'.
'In particular, stress can overload the frontal regions of the brain, where rational evaluations and careful decisions are made. That region then ''opts out,'' leading to impulsive, inappropriate and even violent behaviour. . . . In other words, when the activity of the brain isn't properly integrated, the activity of society isn't properly integrated either.'
These and other factors, including low serotonin and inappropriate cortisol responses, all predispose individuals to crime, and all are byproducts of chronic stress.
The Crime Vaccine, a book by Jay Marcus, outlines this 'General Stress Theory of crime' and presents the Transcendental Meditation Programme as an antidote. Extensive scientific research has documented the effects of the technique in reducing stress and promoting integrated brain functioning.
Global Good News will continue to feature aspects of the article, which goes on to describe successful applications of the approach in The Crime Vaccine for reducing violence and recidivism in maximum security prisons—and presents it as a solution for reducing social stress and crime, and creating coherence in communities and whole nations.
