Latin America sees economic growth as coherence-creating groups of meditators expand

Latin America has seen increasing economic growth over the last two years, during a time of global recession, as well as improvement in political leadership. These positive trends are attributed to the establishment of coherence-creating groups of meditators throughout the continent, say teachers and administrators of the Transcendental Meditation Programme in the region.

Many Latin American countries have seen marked economic development over the last few years—most notably Mexico and Brazil, as well as emerging economies of Peru and other nations. For example, while 5 to 10 years ago Brazil's wealth divide was drastic, with 80 per cent of the population living in poverty, this gap has now closed to a large extent. The optimism in these countries contrasts with relative economic hardships in the US and Europe.

At the same time, many local and national officials have become receptive to the programmes of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. While some have learnt Transcendental Meditation for their own individual benefit, others have adopted comprehensive programmes for public school systems and other institutions.

The two main contributing factors to the positive economic and political trends in the continent are the widespread establishment of groups practising Transcendental Meditation and its advanced programmes, including Yogic Flying, within schools and school systems, through Consciousness-Based Education; and within security forces through Prevention Wings of the Military, say administrators of these programmes.

For example, as of October 2010, 1,500 students were practising Transcendental Meditation and Yogic Flying together within a system of six schools in Peru; and a Prevention Wing of 400 security forces was created in Ecuador as of July 2010. Transcendental Meditation teachers expect that the economic and political climate of Latin America will continue to improve as these programmes expand and consolidate even further.
