Creating peace and reuniting Cyprus was the theme of a celebration in Nicosia on 3 October, which took place at the Ledra Palace in the Green Line—the United Nations buffer zone between north and south Cyprus.
The event was organized by two leaders of the Global Country of World Peace who are Teachers of the Transcendental Meditation Programme, Dr Albert Baruh, National Director of the Global Country in Turkey; and Dr Theodore Pizanis from Cyprus. Over many years, each has taught the Transcendental Meditation Technique to many hundreds of people—Dr Baruh in northern Cyprus, and Dr Pizanis in the south.
Transcendental Meditation practitioners from all parts of Cyprus came together for this celebration. A special feature was a concert of Maharishi Gandharva Veda music, the 'Eternal Music of Nature', which creates balance in Nature, reduces social stress, and produces a harmonious influence in the whole atmosphere.
The celebration generated public interest in the programmes of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Founder of the Transcendental Meditation Programme and the Global Country of World Peace. Group practice of Transcendental Meditation and Yogic Flying (an aspect of the Transcendental Meditation Sidhi Programme) is a scientifically proven approach to create coherence and harmony in collective consciousness, which has been employed successfully to reduce violence and calm trouble spots throughout the world.
Newspapers carried the message, '100 Yogic Flyers could bring peace to Cyprus'. One article noted that Maharishi's programmes fulfil the UNESCO Constitution, which states, 'Wars begin in the minds of men, so it is in the minds of men that the defences of peace must be constructed.'
Dr Baruh and Dr Pizanis are inviting the United Nations to engage a group of Yogic Flyers to create coherence for the nation. 'If coherence is created on the level of collective consciousness, the thinking of the public, the government, business leaders, and administrators, will simply see beyond the darkness in which they have been groping for so long. The approach is to create an Invincible Cyprus. It is the most cost-effective way to deal with tension and terrorism. If the UN comprehends this, we hope to create an example that can be documented and replicated in other locations.'
Dr Baruh and Dr Pizanis are planning the next celebration, and Meditators from the north and south are excited to be working together on this laudable project.
In other developments, a university in northern Cyprus has invitedTteachers of the Transcendental Meditation Programme to instruct students, and lead a course on Creating an Ideal Society.
