Continuing his talk—featured in Part I of this article—for the Global Memorial honoring the extraordinary life and unprecedented global achievements of His Holiness Maharishi Mahesh Yogi held on 7 February 2008 in MERU, Holland, Dr Eike Hartmann, Minister of Global Reconstruction for the Global Country of World Peace, spoke about the scientific basis of Maharishi Vedic Architecture.
'In his life-transforming research', Dr Hartmann said, 'Maharaja Adhiraj Raja Raam, has found that the architecture of human physiology has a one to one relationship with our cosmic counterparts—the sun, moon, planets, and stars. He further elaborated that our brain is highly sensitive to orientation position and direction in space. The research has shown that the firing patterns of neurons in the thalamus of the brain are altered by the direction one is facing.
'When one is facing east, the brain physiology functions differently than facing north, south, or west. There is an increasing body of scientific research on the effect of Vedic Architecture. A study published in the Journal of Affective Disorders reports that comparing inpatients assigned to a room with eastern or western window, those exposed to the highly auspicious eastern light had a mean of about four days shorter hospital stay than patients in western rooms, which shows the great healing power of the light of the rising sun. And these principles have been observed in the design of the Vedic hospital that Dr Picha had shown us before—which is the brightest hospital in the whole world.*
'Another study measured great improvement in the wellbeing of the people who live or work in fortune-creating buildings. Other studies confirmed the negative influence of south-oriented buildings showing more health problems and even more burglaries in homes with inauspicious south entrances.
'In addition, recent discovery indicates that there are small magnets within the cells of the human brain, located in the hippocampus which are acting like miniature compass needles. It means and confirms that the power of thought and the quality of thoughts depend upon the direction one is facing, and that one's sense of direction gets easily confused in daily life when one lives in a building with wrong orientation and resulting in the mixture of physiological, psychological, and behavioural imbalances sometimes called the sick building syndrome, or the sick planning syndrome.
'This finding is very important for health. There are many diseases with unknown causes and which cannot be treated properly unless the cause is removed. . . .
'The sun stands for the organizing intelligence of the universe,' Dr Hartmann continued, 'symbolizing the inner Self of everyone, the self-referral principle, and is the most powerful manifest influence of Natural Law on earth.
'The energy of the auspicious rising sun is completely different from the energy of the setting sun, which is on that side where the energy of the day is sinking and going down, thus influencing the quality of orientation of buildings and functions of rooms and amenities in the building and the layout of the building as a whole.
'The house should be so designed, that the different energies of the sun correspond to the specific function and activity of each room. Then Natural Law always supports and smiles upon every aspect of our daily activity.
'Vedic Architecture is the only science in the world that has the correct and profound understanding of the quality and effect of different types of orientation. For example when the entrance is to the east, it is very auspicious and contributes to all the positive effects of enlightenment, affluence, and fulfillment. Or when the entrance is facing towards the south, very destructive influences, problems and suffering would come every day through the door which could be accumulating even leading to accidents and sudden death.
'In addition, the whole building should always be laid out and properly aligned parallel to north, south, east, and west and not be rotated away from the cardinal direction which is always inauspicious. All these wrongly placed entrances preventing orderly brain functioning may contribute to inauspicious and negative influences like anger and aggression, or constant fear, or even chronic diseases.'
Dr Hartmann then presented an orientation diagram which he said gives information that is basic to 'the health and happiness of everyone and should be on the walls of every classroom and thus become a household knowledge in every home. . . .
'As we have seen inauspicious influences produced by wrong orientation of buildings in the city result in subtle violation of Natural Law which accumulate day after day, and year after year and could cause a thick cloud of social stress suspended over the city, which could eventually break releasing destructive forces of nature, manifesting as natural disaster and catastrophes like earthquakes or hurricanes.
'There's no escape from the fury of nature, and violation of Natural Law is a criminal offence—and ignorance is no excuse.
'The conclusion,' Dr Hartmann said, 'is that every existing city has to be transformed into a coherent ideal city where every house is a fortune-creating building.
