Moscow, capital of oil-rich Russia, targets electric car growth
22 July 2021 - Moscow, capital of one of the world's biggest hydrocarbon exporters, plans to boost the use of electric cars by rolling out a raft of charging infrastructure in the coming years, the city's top transport official told Reuters. The use of electric cars in oil and gas giant Russia lags far behind other European capitals. But Moscow plans to install 200 electric charging stations annually starting this year, said Maxim Liksutov, head of the city's transport department. (more)

Saved by alert waste-sorting plant worker, Russian cat lands on its feet in minister's chair
24 December 2020 - When a worker at a Russian waste-sorting plant rescued a cat from imminent death, he had no idea it would end up with an honorary title and napping in a government official's chair. Surveillance footage at the plant in Ulyanovsk, a city located around 700 km (435 miles) southeast of Moscow, on Monday showed worker Mikhail Tukash scooping up a white plastic bag from a conveyor belt and slashing it open to discover a black and white male cat inside. ... The cat's rescue, broadcast on television and on social media, has made him a local celebrity. He has been adopted by the Ulyanovsk region's environment ministry and unofficially given the position of deputy environment minister. (more)

Russian government recommends banning Wi-Fi and cell phones in primary schools
20 July 2020 - On July 17, 2020, the Russian Ministry of Health published recommendations to schools to ban the use of Wi-Fi and cell phones in elementary schools. The Medical Department of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Russian National Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection, prepared the recommendations together with the Russian Ministry of Health. Numerous studies show profound adverse effects from Wi-Fi. (more)

Food retailer feeds off Russia's appetite for healthy eating
2 April 2020 - In just over 10 years, upstart Russian organic food retailer VkusVill has gone from selling dairy products in a dingy market on Moscow's outskirts to aiming for omnipresence. The chain's main innovation has been its wide assortment of inexpensive organic food. VkusVill works with more than 800 suppliers -- owner Andrei Krivenko describes his company as a 'platform for local producers' -- to stock own-brand food without additives. (more)

Russian alcohol consumption down, life expectancy up, WHO report says
1 October 2019 - Russian alcohol consumption decreased by 43 per cent from 2003 to 2016, a World Health Organization (WHO) report says. It attributed the decline to a series of alcohol-control measures implemented by the state, and a push towards healthy lifestyles. The WHO said the drop in alcohol consumption was linked to a significant rise in life expectancy. It noted that Russia had previously been considered one of the heaviest-drinking countries in the world. (more)

Giant snowballs appear on Russian beach in Siberia
5 November 2016 - A strange and beautiful sight greeted locals in the Gulf of Ob, in northwest Siberia, after thousands of natural snowballs formed on the beach. An 11-mile (18km) stretch of coast was covered in the icy spheres. The sculptural shapes range from the size of a tennis ball to almost 1m (3ft) across. They result from a rare environmental process where small pieces of ice form, are rolled by wind and water, and end up as giant snowballs. (more)

17 August 2016 - On August 19, 1991, a group of eight senior hard-line Communist leaders, including the KGB chairman, had seized power from Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, declaring that Gorbachev was unable to continue as head of the party due to illness. In fact, Gorbachev was under arrest and the 'Gang of Eight' intended to roll back his reformist policies of glasnost and perestroika, which they believed had set the Soviet Union on a path of disaster. Satellite spots world's 'largest' methane leak in a Russian coal mine
15 June 2022 - A coal mine in a remote part of Russia is spewing out huge amounts of a very potent greenhouse gas in what has been described as the 'biggest' leak of methane ever detected from a single facility. The Raspadskya Mine in Kemerovo region in southern Russia is releasing nearly 90 tonnes of methane every hour, according to new data from GHGSat, a company that uses satellites to monitor methane leaks from space. ...
