Iowa Senator Rob Hogg

''Are we going to be able to find a way for 7 billion people to live on this planet sustainably without rendering it uninhabitable or significantly degraded for future generations?''

Fairfield, Iowa (PRWEB) October 22, 2013

Maharishi University of Management's Sustainable Living Department hosts another in a series of Distinguished Lectures. Iowa State Senator Rob Hogg's talk, ''Remembering Hurricane Sandy, Why America Should Make the Fight Against Climate Change Our New National Purpose,'' will be webcast live on MUMTV (http://www.mum.edu/mumtv).

The Sustainable Living Department is proud to welcome State Senator Robert Hogg to Fairfield on Thursday, October 24th. Senator Hogg will be present for a meet and greet potluck at Green Building Supply, sponsored by the Fairfield chapter of the Sierra Club, from 5:45 - 7:30pm, US Central Time.

The Senator's talk, ''Why America Should Make the Fight Against Climate Change Our New National Purpose'', will follow at 7:45pm in Dalby Hall on the MUM campus.

Rob Hogg is an Iowa state senator from Cedar Rapids serving his second term after two terms in the Iowa House. He represented Cedar Rapids during the Flood of 2008 and served as chair of the Senate Rebuild Iowa Committee in 2009 and 2010. He is the author of a new book, America's Climate Century (2013), which he wrote for active citizens who wanted to understand what climate change means for America in the 21st Century and what Americans could do about it.

Earlier this year, he completed a 14-day tour of New Hampshire and other New England states to promote his book and the climate action we so urgently need.

Recounting the climate disasters in 2011, Senator Hogg says the United States was hammered by a record 14 billion-dollar disasters at a total cost of $52 billion—damages of more than $160 per American from just those 14 disasters.

Iowans have suffered floods, drought, and severe storms. Around the country, Americans have suffered damage from hurricanes, tropical storms, floods, droughts, severe storms, wildfires, infestations of pests, and outbreaks of disease. ''These disasters cause severe property damage, endanger people, and disrupt our economy,'' said Senator Hogg. ''Their numbers are growing and will continue to grow until we deal effectively with climate change.''

As the sea levels continue to rise, it is projected that more than 3 million Americans will be displaced from their current homes over the coming century. Globally, the number is much, much higher. ''If we do not stop sea level rise,'' cautioned Senator Hogg, ''you and your family will be affected by the disruption of our global economy and an influx of environmental refugees from other places.''

Senator Hogg says the climate change crisis is the defining historical issue of our time. It is the great moral challenge. He feels we need to deal with this problem and make it ''the central national purpose of our country,'' which affects all other issues. He asks the question: ''Are we going to be able to find a way for 7 billion people to live on this planet sustainably without rendering it uninhabitable or significantly degraded for future generations?''

Tune in online to view Senator Hogg's talk Thursday, Oct 24, at 7:45 pm US Central Time, webcast live from Dalby Hall on the MUM campus on MUMTV (http://www.mum.edu/mumtv).
