The article features Hillary Swanson, who became fascinated with physics while taking Dr John Hagelin's Physics of the Unified Field course as a student at Maharishi School in Fairfield, Iowa, USA. Twelve years later, she is working on her Ph.D. in Physics Education at the University of California, Berkeley.

Intrigued by modern physics and how physicists model the unified field, she majored in physics at Colorado College in Colorado Springs, then taught math, physics, and chemistry at Maharishi School for three years. Her love of teaching led her to complete her master's degree in Secondary Education at Maharishi University of Management, after which she taught integrated math and physics at High Tech High, a charter school in California.

Her doctoral studies are helping her pursue interests in the research and development of alternative approaches to teaching, especially how learners' intuitive knowledge can be leveraged to construct scientific thinking. 'It's important to base your actions on knowledge,' Hillary says. 'That's Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's teaching. The best knowledge to have is the pure knowledge of unbounded consciousness*; that knowledge will structure thoughts and actions that will nourish one's environment the most.'

* Ms Swanson is referring to the experience of pure, transcendental consciousness, the silent, unbounded field of pure intelligence at the basis of the mind's activity. Maharishi's technologies of consciousness, including the Transcendental Meditation Programme, allow the individual to regularly experience pure consciousness in a systematic, reliable, repeatable manner.
