Live demonstrations of EEG coherence during the practice of the Transcendental Meditation Programme drew hundreds of people at a recent yoga conference in Vancouver, Canada. Conference participants appreciated seeing concrete sensory evidence of benefits from the technique. They could see brainwave coherence increase from about 30 per cent to about 85 per cent, less than a minute after a practitioner began the Transcendental Meditation Technique.
Raja Paul Potter, Raja of Invincible Canada for the Global Country of World Peace, reported on the event along with Dr Rich Van Schaik, another leader of the Global Country for Canada.*
Twenty Teachers and practitioners of Transcendental Meditation volunteered at the conference and spoke with about 700 individuals and small groups. 'The volunteers absolutely loved the opportunity to present Maharishi's knowledge, and they gave a very vibrant interface with the audience,' Dr Van Schaik said.
Conference participants were 'very respectful, very receptive—they loved the idea of meditation', he continued.
Although the booth at the conference featured a rich variety of knowledge and presentations, 'once we began running the EEG demonstrations, it became apparent very quickly that this was the most attractive, most compelling presentation,' Dr Van Schaik said.
The five-minute demonstration began with a simple introduction to EEG and Transcendental Meditation; then a volunteer would begin to meditate and the audience could see a dramatic increase in coherence—displayed on a monitor—within about 30 seconds; and then a drop in coherence when the volunteer stopped meditating.
'This change from 30 per cent coherence to 85 per cent was very dramatic and compelling to all the participants at the yoga conference. Quite simply, they had no response to it. They simply had to accept it, because it was a concrete sensory-evidence right before their eyes in real time,' Dr Van Schaik said.
After the conference, about 200 people attended introductory lectures about the Transcendental Meditation Programme, and about 20 decided to learn the technique.
In the coming days Global Good News will feature the continuation of this report about new EEG machines that make it easy to give live demonstrations.
