Dr Peter Swan demonstrates Vedic principles of nature's food cycle

Speaking 29 July 2008 on Maharishi Global Family Chat in continuation of the Global Guru Purnima Assembly in MERU, Netherlands, Dr Peter Swan, Minister of Communication for the Global Country of World Peace, honoured the knowledge of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi with a presentation on the food cycle and its underlying Vedic principles.
Dr Swan began with a diagram displaying the basic cycle of food production in the environment. He explained how the fundamental elements of sunshine, air, water, rock minerals, and organic matter are digested by bacteria and fungi, which are in turn consumed by grazers. The grazers, subsequently, are consumed by predators, whose waste products provide nutrients for further plant growth. 'Plants constitute the driving force for the entire nutrient cycle,' Dr Swan added, 'since they transform sunlight into food for all other things.'
Citing Maharishi's commentary on the food cycle, Dr Swan continued, 'there are two fullnesses giving to each other constantly: the fullness of photosynthesis in plants and the fullness of nutrients and protection provided by humus—the rocks, minerals, water, and warmth, all present in the earth. As these fullnesses give to one another, they become more and more, not less and less.'
To demonstrate this principle further, Dr Swan referred to a well-known passage from the Upanishads:
Purnam adah purnam idam purnat purnam udachyate purnasya purnam adaya purnam evavashishyate*
'That is full; this is full; from fullness, fullness comes out; taking fullness from fullness, what remains is fullness.'
'This is but one of the many areas in the natural sciences where Maharishi has brought out total Natural Law,' said Dr Swan. 'It is an honour and joy to demonstrate this one area more clearly, as a small offering back to Maharishi for the source of Total Knowledge he has gifted to the whole world.'
