Research on EEG brain wave coherence: Visualizing Totality, Brahm, in the physiology - Part I

During a recent Global Family Chat on the Maharishi Channel, Dr Alarik Arenander, Director of the Brain Research Institute at Maharishi University of Management, Fairfield, Iowa, USA, and world expert on EEG brain wave coherence through Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation (TM) Technique, discussed how the research in this area helps us 'to visualize Totality—Brahm' in the physiology; and also presented a new area of research on EEG coherence produced by listening to Vedic Recitation.
'We wanted to see the value of Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation Technique through its effects on the physiology. We are now more able to visualize Totality—Brahm,' he began, showing the audience a small black box that is a new EEG system.
His address was divided into three sections: local and global coherence, the dynamics of loops in terms of object-referral and self-referral, and how alpha frequencies give us insight into the structure of Atma, the Self—the flow of Totality in human awareness.
'The human mind offers the full range of possibilities from Atma, fullness, the inner awareness of the Self, to outer, object referral. The brain is the reflector of all possibilities of consciousness. At every level of brain functioning there is a corresponding level of experiences,' he said.
EEG studies show incredible transition from fluctuating coherence [in normal, waking states] to high coherence when the mind settles down during the practice of the Transcendental Meditation Technique, and it experiences full transcendence.
In the first area of discussion—local and global coherence—Dr Arenander explained loops: the togetherness of silence and dynamism, in which 'one impulse of consciousness interacts with another impulse of consciousness. There is a cyclic feedback phenomenon, a coming and going, an expanding and contracting—a circular motion both in the physiology and in awareness that allows us to appreciate the Totality that is the birthright of a human being. This is the mechanics of brain functioning in which loops upon loops of back and forth motion structure brain coherence, and therefore the highest levels of human experience.'
He described how the front part of the brain is the reflection of the 'CEO', or the individual's sense of self, while the back part is where we construct our reality of the world. During Transcendental Meditation practice they become coherent; and during this brain wave coherence we see three phenomena: (1) simplification—diversity becomes unified, (2) orderliness—each part of the brain becomes locally orderly, and (3) wholeness—brain waves come together and create wholeness. 'Brain wave coherence is the best measure of enlightenment. All good things are shown to be related to brain wave coherence.'
