Speaking recently on the Maharishi Channel Global Family Chat, Dr Michael Dillbeck, Raja (Administrator) of France for the Global Country of World Peace and the world's leading expert on the scientific research on Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation Programme, presented an explanation of the meta-analyses of the indicators of deep rest produced by the practice of Transcendental Meditation.

Please see the article about high blood pressure in which Dr Dillbeck explained meta-analysis of studies indicating the reduction of high blood pressure in hypertensive patients.

'Balance in the physiology is the natural by-product of enlivening the body's own inner intelligence,' Dr Dillbeck continued in his presentation on Global Family Chat. 'It is the by-product of the experience of Transcendental Consciousness during the practice of Transcendental Meditation. As the mind settles down, one experiences an unbounded ocean of consciousness, which is our own Self, Atma in the Vedic language.

'The result of that is to enliven the inner intelligence of the physiology, in which the total intelligence of Natural Law is contained, and when that field of total Natural Law, the Unified Field, is experienced and enlivened,' said Dr Dillbeck, 'then all the various mechanisms in the body that maintain balance are naturally enlivened. The whole physiology tends to become more in harmony with Natural Law, more balanced.'

Dr Dillbeck then spoke about meta-analyses over the last twenty years, the first of which was published in 1987 and was a study to look at the physiology of the practice of Transcendental Meditation. This meta-analysis combined the effects found in previous studies and compared the effects to just sitting with eyes closed.

Dr Dillbeck presented charts of the study, which showed physiological indicators of deep rest through Transcendental Meditation: reduction of respiration rate; reduction of basal skin conductance, which indicates calmness in the physiology; and reduced plasma lactate, a chemical associated with stress and anxiety.

'This is not new information for anyone practising Transcendental Meditation but is a confirmation from a meta-analysis of 31 studies, all showing this profound effect,' said Dr Dillbeck.

A second aspect of the meta-analysis was the very interesting finding that not only were people experiencing immediate calming of the physiology, but how calm people were before they started to practice Transcendental Meditation; how much the effect of the deep rest was stabilized in their physiology as an on-going and permanent reality.

In a study entitled 'Calmer style of physiological functioning: less stress in daily activity', on all four of the measures those practising Transcendental Meditation showed great calmness in their physiology outside the practice. The effects were stabilized: for example, reduced respiration rate, reduced heart rate—the heart was beating more quietly, more calmly; reduced spontaneous skin resistance response, which means less agitation in electrical activity on the skin; and plasma lactate, a biochemical indicator of stress, decreased.

'This all indicates calmness in the physiology prior to Transcendental Meditation and this calmness was accelerated during the practice. It is the stabilization of the deep silence of Transcendental Consciousness in our physiology and our awareness that is the hallmark of rising enlightenment,' said Dr Dillbeck.

'We can take this meta-analysis, particularly on the effects on the results outside Transcendental Meditation, as an indicator of the rise of Cosmic Consciousness* in these individuals.'

* Maharishi explains that beyond the familiar states of waking, dreaming, and sleeping are four higher states of consciousness—Transcendental Consciousness, Cosmic Consciousness, God Consciousness, and Unity Consciousness—that arise from the regular practice of his Transcendental Meditation and its advanced techniques, each bringing a new dimension of experience, knowledge, and fulfilment.
