With more than 70 million Americans suffering from hypertension and another 30 percent of Americans with prehypertension, this dangerous condition caused or complicated by stress is hard to control with just medication. An article published in Newsmax called ''8 Ways to Lower Your Blood Pressure Without Medication''* described the practice of Transcendental Meditation as a valid technique to lower blood pressure.
Dr. Cesar Molina, Medical Director of the South Asian Heart Center at El Camino Hospital in California, stated:
''. . . . [W]e need to remember that high blood pressure is, in fact, the most important risk factor for both stroke and coronary heart disease. Research studies have consistently demonstrated a drop in the blood pressure of people who practice the Transcendental Meditation technique.''
At the end of one carefully controlled study funded by the National Institutes of Health, the TM program was associated with a 48% greater reduction in the composite of mortality, nonfatal heart attacks and nonfatal strokes than those who had not learned TM.
