A video produced by the David Lynch Foundation with highlights of their 5th annual gala event, Change Begins Within, was shown recently to acclaim at Maharishi European Research University in the Netherlands. The event, held 3 December at the Conrad Hotel in New York City, was in honour of veterans and first responders (police and fire department personnel).

Gala honourees included Hugh Jackman and his wife, actress Deborra-lee Furness, who received the 'Lifetime of Giving' award; and New York City Fire Department Commissioner Salvatore Cassano, who received the 'Lifetime of Service' award.

Commissioner Cassano reported that the purpose of this year's gala was to raise funds to provide instruction in Transcendental Meditation to New York City veterans and first responders 'who really need help'. Their work is highly stressful and many suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). He also commented that offering the Transcendental Meditation programme helps them know that their sacrifice for their country and city is not forgotten.

On the topic of Transcendental Meditation, Mr Jackman said practising the simple mental technique has changed his family's lives. He said, 'Our kids do it, and we do it together as a family. We are the kind of people, when we find something good, we spread the word.' The David Lynch Foundation, he concluded, is making it possible for people who really need Transcendental Meditation to have it.

In the video several David Lynch Foundation officers and supporters, all of whom have seen remarkable transformations in the lives of men and women through Transcendental Meditation, gave short tributes. The event was headlined by comedian Jerry Seinfeld. Other speakers included world renowned quantum physicist Dr John Hagelin, President of the David Lynch Foundation; Jake Clark of the Warrior Meditation Project; John Rigg, MD; and decorated World War II fighter pilot, Jerry Yellin. Mr Yellin is Co-Chair of Operation Warrior Wellness, the David Lynch Foundation initiative that focuses specifically on helping combat veterans overcome the effects of traumatic stress.
