In May the weekly German news magazine Spiegel, described as Germany's largest and Europe's most influential news magazine, published a cover story about meditation. The article addressed topics including the healing mind, medical science, and health effects of meditation and relaxation. It mentioned several methods of meditation, but featured prominently research on Transcendental Meditation conducted by Maharishi University of Management professor Robert Schneider, MD, FACC, showing lower blood pressure and 48% lower risk of heart attack, stroke, and death in cardiac patients practising the technique.
The article also gave recognition to Maharishi Mahesh Yogi as the Founder of the Transcendental Meditation programme, crediting him with generating interest in meditation in the West.
In general, said Dr Eckart Stein, Director of the new Maharishi Peace Palace in Erfurt, Germany, the article shows that meditation is becoming mainstream. Transcendental Meditation teachers are continuing to inform the public, he said, about the ever-increasing body of published scientific research establishing Transcendental Meditation as the most effective meditation technique.
A number of other press articles about Transcendental Meditation have come out in the past year in Germany, for example on David Lynch and TM, published in Süddeutsche Zeitung.
In a TV interview Dr med Ulrich Bauhofer explained the effectiveness of Transcendental Meditation.
A recently released book by Dr Bauhofer, In Balance leben (Living in Balance), deals with how to reduce stress in daily life and offers a practical solution—Transcendental Meditation.
Another book, whose title translated into English is How to Manage the Manager, was written by two German teachers of Transcendental Meditation. Originally available only as an e-book, it is now available in a print edition.
Dr med Michael Matthis, a leading German physican, had an article on Transcendental Meditation and heart health published in the magazine Natur-Heilkunde Journal.
Light on Ayurveda Journal published an article by Dr. phil. Karin Pirc, Lothar Pirc, and Dr Jeremy Fields, on 'Enlightenment—The Goal of Yoga and Ayurveda: From Philosophy to Science'. The article explains the characteristics of the seven states of consciousness described by Maharishi in his Vedic Science. Lothar Pirc is co-founder of the Maharishi Ayurveda Health Centre in Bad Ems, Germany, along with his wife, Dr Karin Pirc, who is also the medical director.
The recently published 24-page brochure of scientific research on Transcendental Meditation has been translated into German and is available throughout Germany.
Leading German medical doctors have collaborated to create a flyer on doctors recommending Transcendental Meditation. The flyer will be made available to doctors to give their patients about the health benefits of the meditation technique.
