In June Dr Rossano Maset, a teacher of the Transcendental Meditation programme in Italy who serves as education director for the organization, participated in an international conference in Bologna, on Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The conference was organized by the Italian Society of Traumatic Stress Studies in collaboration with a network of Italian universities and institutions.
Dr Maset presented to scientists from several European countries the results of research conducted by Fred Travis, PhD,, in a talk titled 'Transcending trauma: Effectiveness of Transcendental Meditation practice for combating PTSD'. Dr Travis, Dean of the Graduate School at Maharishi University of Management, USA, is also Director of the Center for Brain, Consciousness, and Cognition.
Dr Travis is co-author of a study published in April in the Journal of Traumatic Stress, which found that Transcendental Meditation significantly reduced post traumatic stress in refugees from the Congolese civil war in Africa. The study reported immediate and dramatic reductions of PTSD to a non-symptomatic level after 30 days of Transcendental Meditation practice, remaining low at the study's endpoint of 135 days. In contrast, PTSD symptoms in the control group increased over the same time period.
Research conducted in the USA has also found Transcendental Meditation to be effective in the treatment of PTSD in military veterans, including those from the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts.
The scientific audience reacted to the talk with great appreciation for the accuracy of the applied methodology, and for the beneficial results shown in the research findings. After the conference Dr Maset answered many questions on Transcendental Meditation.
In related news from Italy, senior health officials have been informed of the benefits of using Transcendental Meditation to alleviate PTSD.
