The Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Maryland hosted a conference on the power of Transcendental Meditation to heal and transform. Featured speakers at the conference were Norman Rosenthal, MD, and Pamela Peeke, MD.

The conference, called The New Science of Meditation and Self-Healing: Transcendental Meditation and Mind-Body Medicine, was hosted by Stuart Rothenberg, MD, and the founder of the Center for Integrative Medicine, Brian Berman, MD.

Dr Rothenberg, as Programme Director for the Transcendental Meditation Health Professionals Association, spoke briefly about that association's goal.

He said, 'The mission of our association is to provide educational and professional development opportunities for health professionals and others in mind-body medicine and the clinical applications of Transcendental Meditation.'

In other words, these health professionals have seen positive results with Transcendental Meditation and want to spread the word among others in their field.

Dr Rothenberg also extended thanks to the University of Maryland for hosting the conference.

'We are delighted to be hosted tonight by the University of Maryland Center for Integrative Medicine in this beautiful historic venue, Davidge hall, which is the oldest continuously used medical education facility in the United States,' Dr Rothenberg said, adding that the use of the hall dates back to 1812.

In addition, Dr Rothenberg thanked and introduced the director of the University of Maryland Center for Integrative Medicine.

'Dr Brian Berman founded the University of Maryland Center for Integrative Medicine, which is the first programme of its kind. . . . Recognized as a leading pioneer of integrative medicine, he is also professor of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Dr Berman is a National Institutes of Health-funded researcher... [and] was the recipient of the Bravewell Leadership Award for his achievements in ''transforming health care in America and ushering in a new practice of medicine''.'
