On Monday, 8 October, Alternatives at St James's Church, Piccadilly, London, will host a talk by Norman E. Rosenthal, M.D.* An eminent psychiatrist and researcher, Dr Rosenthal is the author of the New York Times bestseller Transcendence: Healing and Transformation through Transcendental Meditation, as well as Winter Blues.

His presentation, entitled Healing Transcendence, is one of a series of presentations he is giving to varied audiences in London and Dublin in early October on the subjects of his bestselling books, recently updated and re-released in the UK.

Dr. Rosenthal first described seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and pioneered light therapy in its treatment. He has conducted pioneering research on Transcendental Meditation and its dramatic beneficial effects on Post-Traumatic Stress in veterans.

Transcendental Meditation (TM) is an ancient form of meditation, which is a powerful technique for improving physical health, promoting personal growth and boosting performance. The technique is readily learned from a skilled teacher, and is practised while sitting comfortably for 15-20 minutes twice a day.

Extensive research documents the benefits of Transcendental Meditation on the body and brain (over 330 peer-reviewed publications). Specifically, TM can lower blood pressure, reverse cardiovascular disease, prevent heart attacks and strokes, and prolong life. The effects on the brain are equally remarkable, causing the brain to shift to calming alpha-wave rhythms and become more coherent (i.e., different parts of the brain work more harmoniously together).

Research also shows that TM can reduce anxiety and depression, and help people with post-traumatic stress disorder. By soothing the fight-or-flight response, TM allows people to focus more clearly on their goals, be more creative, and become their best selves.

Dr Rosenthal will illustrate these principles with colourful stories of individuals from many different backgrounds who have experienced recovery and transformation through this technique.
