The goal of the Operation Warrior Wellness event in New York City in early August was to raise awareness of the severe, often tragic, consequences of living with Post-Traumatic Stress—as well as the cost-effective treatment available utilizing Transcendental Meditation.
One of the most moving stories told at the event was that shared by Deborah Ortiz, the wife of a retired New York police officer. She mentioned her husband's descent into Post-Traumatic Stress and its nightmarish impact on both their lives.
She also spoke freely of his almost immediate good results after beginning to practise Transcendental Meditation. 'My husband has tried many forms of therapy,' Ms Ortiz said. 'After three days of practising TM, I began to see a light shine from his eyes that I had not seen for a very long time.'
Adam Pressman, national director of video productions for the David Lynch Foundation, arranged to interview both Ms Ortiz and her husband the next day.
This interview, he said, will form the core of Operation Warrior Wellness's outreach to first responders, such as police officers and firefighters, to let them know of this highly effective meditation technique.
'With people like this coming forward and speaking out, and really reaching out to the people in their own profession,' Mr Pressman added, 'we can connect with those individuals.' It makes a much more compelling presentation, he said, when 'those who work in that area explain to their colleagues exactly how effective this is'.
Speaking as someone who has experienced and presented the scientifically validated benefits of Transcendental Meditation, but has not had the stressful career of a first responder, Mr Pressman commented, 'We can express the theory and research. But when someone who has actually had the experience in that profession comes forward to tell a very profound and moving story of how this has changed their life, how this has given them a tremendous advantage, relief, and resilience . . . then this is much more effective.'
