Maharishi Ayurveda, a holistic approach to health from four main angles

What makes Maharishi Ayurveda different from other forms of medicine?
Dr Stuart Rothenberg, National Director of Health Professional Training at Maharishi Ayurveda Association of America, recently answered this question when he described an ongoing course that is training wellness consultants in Maharishi Ayurveda.
Dr Rothenberg said that every analysis of a patient includes a specialized Ayurvedic history, a physical examination, and also the unique method of Ayurvedic pulse diagnosis, Nadi vigyan.
The wellness consultants are trained to take an Ayurvedic history of the patient, a history which looks more holistically at the patient's health. In addition, wellness consultants are taught to address health problems holistically. Holistically means from four different angles: mind, body, behaviour, and environment.
The angle of the mind includes mental techniques like Transcendental Meditation and its advanced techniques such as the Transcendental Meditation Sidhi Programme.
From the approach of body and behaviour, Maharishi Ayurveda wellness consultants offer individualized lifestyle counseling in terms of diet, digestion, and daily routine. They also provide training in Vedic exercise with Yoga asanas and pranayama (breathing exercise), along with the use of herbal preparations and aromatherapy for health and rejuvenation, and purification procedures.
The wellness consultants have strategies for improving health from the environmental angle as well. In the near environment, those strategies include Maharishi Sthapatya Veda, or Vedic architecture, which is architecture and city planning in accord with Natural Law.
Maharishi Ayurveda also acknowledges the impact of collective health, or the distant environment, on the individual.
'Everyone should be aware of this because our individual health is very much influenced by the state of collective health and consciousness,' said Dr Rothenberg.
Therefore, in its broadest sense, Maharishi Ayurveda includes utilizing Transcendental Meditation and advanced techniques, including Yogic Flying, to purify the near and distant environment and help create perfect collective health—world peace.
