ADHD Awareness Week 16-22 October 2011: Transcendental Meditation improves behavior, brain function in ADHD students
Transcendental Meditation - USA www.TM.org Translate This Article
21 October 2011
The theme of this year's ADHD Awareness Week, 16-22 October, is ''Get the Facts!'' A new perspective on attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and its treatment has been growing among health professionals, students, and their parents, based on new facts and knowledge -- stemming from recent scientific research on beneficial effects of the Transcendental Meditation (TM) program in students with ADHD.
The Transcendental Meditation® program improves behavior and brain function in ADHD students
The number of children diagnosed with ADHD increases every year. As doubts emerge about the effectiveness of ADHD medications, and concern grows about their risks, it is not surprising that parents are seeking alternative approaches as a tool for helping children with ADHD.
A growing number of clinicians also support alternative approaches, saying that emphasis on medical therapy alone focuses only on control of symptoms, but doesn't really respond to the need for children to develop important behavioral and social skills.
Choosing a technique that is easy to practice
The Transcendental Meditation technique is an effortless, easy-to-learn practice, unique among categories of meditation. The TM® technique does not require concentration, controlling the mind, or disciplined focus—challenges for anyone with ADHD.
Research
Two recent studies on the benefits of the Transcendental Meditation technique show that it can reduce the symptoms of ADHD and improve cognitive function.
The studies show:
∙ 26% reduction in attention problems
∙ 19% improvement in expressive attention
∙ 13% improvement in executive planning and problem solving
∙ 48% reduction in the theta/beta ratios
∙ 30% increase in brain coherence
Also improvements in:
∙ Behavior regulation
∙ Emotional control
∙ Global executive functioning
∙ Self-monitoring
∙ Inhibiting
∙ Initiating
∙ Memory
∙ Organization
Global Good News will feature more about the Transcendental Meditation program and ADHD in the coming days, including video clips and specific research studies.
