India: 4th World Ayurveda Congress - Ayurveda offers solution to healthcare
by Global Good New staff writer

4 February 2011
The theme of the fourth biennial World Ayurveda Congress—Ayurveda for all—shared the vision of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi to offer to everyone everywhere, ideal natural holistic healthcare, free from negative side effects.
The purpose of the conference was to support Ayurveda in India and countries around the world, and to establish the scientific validity of this ancient knowledge in modern terms, said Robert Schneider, MD, dean of the Maharishi College of Perfect Health.
Dr Schneider gave a keynote address on Maharishi Ayurveda at the conference.
Attended by more than 4,000 people—including 300 international delegates—the conference is the largest gathering of Ayurveda specialists, comprising practitioners, scientists, policy makers, government representatives, industry leaders, and students.
The group expressed the general sentiment that 'the current healthcare system in the world, and in India in particular, is inadequate,' Dr Schneider continued.
Healthcare in India has been modernized and westernized in recent decades, he said, reporting on 4 February. 'There's a rising disillusionment with the modern healthcare system, in terms of both cost and adverse side effects—the hazards of modern medicine.'
There are 'high rates of chronic diseases now which are emerging in India: diabetes, obesity, hypertension, heart disease—despite the inventions, despite the utilization of modern medicine.'
Government officials, health experts, and others at the conference felt that 'India's traditional system of medicine, particularly Ayurveda, held the answers for healthcare in India. And the international delegates also felt that the traditional medicine of the Vedic civilization also has the answers for the healthcare needs of the West and other parts of the world.'
In the coming days Global Good News will feature the continuation of Dr Schneider's discussion of the conference.
