Four of the main daily newspapers in the UK—The Daily Telegraph, The Independent, The Daily Mail and The Guardian—carried thorough reports recently about the latest research showing reduced depression through the Transcendental Meditation Programme. The results of two new studies were presented on 9 April at the 31st Annual Meeting of the Society of Behavioral Medicine in Seattle, Washington, in the US.
'The Beatles were right. Meditation can be good for you', was the headline in The Daily Telegraph, while The Daily Mail article opened: 'Chant yourself healthy: Meditation hailed as antidote to high blood pressure and depression.'
Under a similar headline, 'How The Beatles' meditation technique could cure depression', the article in The Independent continued with a summary of the research, saying: 'Transcendental Meditation, the technique of achieving a state of 'restful alertness' popularised by The Beatles 40 years ago, may be an effective treatment for depression in older people, scientists have found.
'Two studies of more than 100 patients at risk of heart disease showed that those who practised the technique experienced a reduction in depressive symptoms of up to 48 per cent. Depression increases the risk of a heart attack even at moderate levels.'
Three of the newspapers mentioned that one of the studies was carried out at Charles Drew University in Los Angeles and the other at University of Hawaii in Kohala. Both The Daily Telegraph and The Independent quoted Hector Myers, professor of clinical training at the department of psychology at the University of California in Los Angeles, as saying: 'These results are encouraging and provide support for testing the efficacy of Transcendental Meditation as a therapeutic adjunct in the treatment of clinical depression.'
