Research in both the UK and the US shows that people enquire about and learn Transcendental Meditation primarily to ease stress and anxiety, and gain relaxation. Transcendental Meditation Teachers are increasingly utilizing social media to make sure people are aware of the wide-ranging, scientifically verified benefits of the programme.
Dr Charles Cunningham, Director of Communication for the Global Country of World Peace in Great Britain, reported* on growing interest in meditation in general, and on research showing diverse reasons people learn the Transcendental Meditation Programme.
After stress relief, self-improvement is the second major reason people are interested in Transcendental Meditation, he reported.
Dr Cunningham reported that: ∙ 60% look into Transcendental Meditation for stress, anxiety, and relaxation; ∙ 38% for self-improvement, clarity, and inner peace; and ∙ 25% for health.
People gave their reasons in a free format, not in terms of specific categories, so the information can be classified in different ways, Dr Cunningham said.
Another way to look at the results, he explained, is that well over 57% are seeking emotional benefits; 20% are seeking self-improvement; 6% are seeking physical benefits; 5% are seeking improved mental performance; and 2% are seeking benefits for relationships. These results correspond very closely to percentages found in the US, Dr Cunningham said.
Teachers of Transcendental Meditation continue to focus on making knowledge of Transcendental Meditation widely available, particularly on the Internet, Dr Cunningham continued.
In a recent workshop, Teachers learned to use social media so that as many people as possible can learn about the profound benefits of Transcendental Meditation and take advantage of the programme.
* Dr Cunningham's report was featured on the 22 January 2010 Maharishi Global Family Chat, broadcast daily via Internet webcast on the Maharishi Channel, Channel 3. Podcasts of the daily Global Family Chat (audio track) are also now available for automatic download, via an RSS feed.
