On 17 January 2009 NBC News reported:
A study on the Transcendental Meditation Technique and blood pressure is currently underway at Howard University Hospital in Washington, DC, USA.
It is a joy for Global Good News service to feature this news, which indicates the success of the life-supporting programmes Maharishi has designed to bring
fulfilment to the field of health.
'That quietness inside . . . two times a day for twenty minutes, will change your life,' said 56-year old Rosemary Palmer Powell who had been taking medication for her high blood pressure for years when, after getting a routine check at last year's NBC for Health and Fitness Expo, she started down a whole new treatment path.
'I've been doing Transcendental Meditation for six solid months, and it has really changed my life.'
Palmer Powell was selected to be part of a Howard University Hospital study on the effect of Transcendental Meditation on high blood pressure. Otelio Randall, MD, the hospital cardiologist leading the study, said that the meditation should decrease the stress, slow down the heart rate, cause the vessels to relax, to dilate, which results in the blood pressure going down.
The study is designed to compare blood pressure rates between two groups, those who are practising Transcendental Meditation and those who are not. An instructor works with the meditation group once a week and then patients are required to practise it on their own.
Patients are telling the doctor they think the meditation is helping: one patient said meditation has become incerasingly enjoyable so 'I've wanted to do it. I've craved doing it,' she said.
Another patient is still on medication but the dosage is lower now. 'Eventually you become calmer; you become less stressed. You can handle stressful situations more,' she said.
Howard University Hospital is seeking additional participants to join this blood pressure study.
