Meditation cuts ADHD symptoms in kids
Times of India Translate This Article
10 January 2009
On 10 January 2009 Times of India reported:
A recent study of middle school students showed that the practice of the Transcendental Meditation Programme significantly improved symptoms of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
It is a joy for Global Good News service to feature this news, which indicates the success of the life-supporting programmes Maharishi has designed to bring
fulfilment to the field of health.
The students participating in the George Washington University study practised Transcendental Meditation for 10 minutes twice each day as part of their school day.
After the programme started, their teachers reported that the students were learning more easily. At the end of three months the students' level of anxiety and stress was reduced by 50 per cent and they 'showed improvements in attention, working memory, organization, and behaviour regulation', lead researcher Sarina J. Grosswald, EdD was quoted as saying.
'Virtually everyone finds it difficult to pay attention, organize themselves and get things done when they're under stress,' clinical neuropsychologist and co-author of the study William Stixrud, PhD, was quoted as saying. 'So it stands to reason that the Transcendental Meditation technique which reduces stress and organizes brain function would reduce ADHD symptoms,' Stixrud explained in the article.
The Times of India reported that while medication can be helpful for some students with ADHD, for other students it is not sufficiently helpful and can produce negative side effects.
