Federal agencies hold workshop on meditation and health
The M.U.M. Review Maharishi University of Management, Iowa, USA Translate This Article
6 October 2008
In July a number of government agencies cosponsored a workshop on meditation for health purposes that was attended by experts in a range of disciplines, including researchers on the Transcendental Meditation technique.
The purpose of the workshop was to articulate potential goals and directions for research on the mechanisms and efficacy of meditation practices for a variety of health concerns, said Medical College of Georgia researcher Vernon Barnes, who received his Ph.D. at Maharishi University of Management and who was present at the workshop.
David Orme-Johnson, retired dean of research at Maharishi University of Management, presented a review of research on the Transcendental Meditation technique. Also, Paul Mills, who received his Ph.D. from Maharishi International University* and is now a professor at the University of California, San Diego, presented recommendations for biomarkers of inflammation for meditation research.
''Of course, my message was that transcending** is the key and that the Transcendental Meditation technique is the most effective way to do that,'' Dr. Orme-Johnson said. ''And because we now have nearly 40 years of experience researching meditation, I just tried to help them with whatever research issues they were dealing with, and they really appreciated it. Several times the organizers and individual presenters thanked me for my contributions. I spoke up quite often.''
The workshop was hosted by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine of the National Institutes of Health and cosponsored by several national institutes.
Workshop members shared a wide range of involvement in the field of meditation research and were asked to critically examine the current state of science on meditation for health, and to identify ways to further this area of science.

Global Good News comment:
* Maharishi University of Management was founded by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in 1971, and was known from 1971-1995 as Maharishi International University.
** The process through which the conscious mind spontaneously settles down and experiences increasingly refined levels of its own functioning, eventually coming to experience the field of Pure Consciousness, the unbounded, silent field at the basis of all the mind's activity. The process of transcending is promoted systematically through the effortless practice of Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation.
