Dr Arenander addresses Iowa Brain Injury Association
The M.U.M. Review Maharishi University of Management, Iowa, USA Translate This Article
5 April 2008
Approximately 350 specialists in rehabilitating individuals with brain injuries recently heard of the potential of the Transcendental Meditation technique for helping these victims.
Alarik Arenander, director of the University's Brain Research Institute, was invited to give a keynote address to the Brain Injury Association of Iowa—the third time he has addressed this group.
Dr. Arenander explained that therapies are limited if one's awareness is reduced due to injury, causing, for example, depression and lack of motivation. The answer, he said, is to increase the individual's awareness via practice of the Transcendental Meditation technique, which has been shown to increase the coherence and integration of the brain.
Neuroplasticity, which is at the basis of the brain's ability to heal itself, is influenced by the experiences of an individual and can profoundly affect the prefrontal cortex, the brain's executive control center. This area of the brain has been shown to function more effectively as the result of the experience gained during the Transcendental Meditation technique.
Dr. Arenander said that there was an enthusiastic response. 'Thank you, Alarik, for a terrific speech,' wrote the society's president Julie Dixon in an e-mail. 'I heard many participants say that they learned a great deal from your speech and were energized by it.'
Dr. Arenander also gave over 65 presentations during a two-month speaking tour in Europe and Ukraine last fall, as well as giving TV, radio, and print interviews. He spoke about the value of total brain function and gave live demonstrations of the coherence in EEG patterns in individuals practicing the Transcendental Meditation technique.
