On 29 March 2005 The Emory Wheel Online reported:
The National Institutes of Health awarded $6 million to a partnership between Emory University and Morehouse School of Medicine. The five-year partnership will focus on eliminating cardiovascular health problems. The study will be divided into three main projects, one of them investigating Transcendental Meditation as a means to reduce blood pressure.
It is a joy for Global Good News service to feature this news, which indicates the success of the life-supporting programmes Maharishi has designed to bring
fulfilment to the field of health.
According to the director and founder of Morehouse School of Medicine Cardiovascular Research Institute, this partnership with Emory is 'unprecedented'. The article said that both schools are looking forward to working together on this project entitled, 'Morehouse and Emory are teaming up to eliminate Health Disparities', or META-Health.
META-Health will conduct tests on residents in the Southeast, the area with the largest risk of developing cardiovascular disease. The article mentioned that the participants would be both white and black, though previous research has found that blacks are at a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease.
The first project will focus on taking a survey of participants and measuring body weight and blood parameters. The second project involves studying patients being treated for high blood pressure or metabolic syndrome. The Emory Wheel Online article explained that this study would focus primarily on blacks.
The final study will examine the effect of Transcendental Meditation, a meditation that the article defined as a means to promote 'deep relaxation'' for reducing high blood pressure in blacks.
The leaders of the study hope that their research will be key in helping minorities to 'take charge of their lives and manage these factors'.
